Kindergarten Registration Starts Today!

posted Feb 21, 2017, 11:11 AM by Kathryn Lounsbury

Free Full-Day Kindergarten – Fall 2017
Salem-Keizer Public Schools offers free full-day kindergarten. Half-day kindergarten is not offered in Salem-Keizer, however many private kindergarten providers offer half-day programs. Children are not required to attend kindergarten, but attendance is strongly recommended.
Registration for fall 2017 kindergarten opens Tuesday, February 21, 2017.
Parents are asked to register for kindergarten as soon as possible. The district needs to know how many students will be attending and where in order to prepare an adequate number of classrooms. Early registration helps make sure kindergarten students will have a comfortable start to the school year.
Children who will turn five years old on or before September 10, 2017, are eligible to register. To register, please visit the school assigned to serve your residence address and pick up a registration packet.
To find the school that serves your residence, visit the district boundary information page.  For more information about registering for kindergarten, please call your school or visit the Kindergarten page.

Important Information re: Snow Days

posted Jan 19, 2017, 11:06 AM by Kathryn Lounsbury

Make-up days for snow closures announced

Due to inclement weather, Salem-Keizer students have missed four full school days, had one early release and one late start this school year.

Time at school is essential to student success. To make up for some lost instructional time, the district has decided to make changes to the school calendar.

Three school days have been added to the calendar:

  • Thursday, March 23, 2017, will be a school day for all students. Parent-Teacher conferences will take place after school and in the evening.
  • Thursday and Friday, June 15 and 16, 2017, will be school days for all students except graduating seniors. High schools will develop a revised schedule for second semester finals.

Dates of high school graduation ceremonies will not change.

Please be aware that additional calendar changes could be made if there is more inclement weather.

Immunization Update

posted Jan 5, 2017, 3:48 PM by Kathryn Lounsbury

Exclusion Day is Coming Up!
Each year, every school in Oregon must comply with the existing state health laws.  By law, children who are not in compliance with immunization requirements by FEBRUARY 15th will be excluded from attending school until their immunization requirements have been updated.

If your child has not had all the required immunizations, you will receive a letter letting you know which immunizations need to be updated.  Please schedule an appointment immediately with your child’s healthcare provider.

Once your child has had the required immunization(s), please bring documentation from the healthcare provider to the school office so we can update their records in our system.  Our goal is that no child is excluded from learning.

Your Child’s Safety

posted Jan 4, 2017, 3:10 PM by Kathryn Lounsbury   [ updated Jan 4, 2017, 3:12 PM ]

Practicing Lockdown Procedures

State law requires schools to conduct two lockdown drills per year. Schools will be conducting a lockdown drill within the first two weeks of the school year, and again within the first two weeks after winter break. These drills will not be a simulation of a threat and are not intended to scare students. We do want students to take the drills seriously so they are familiar with lockdown routines and procedures.

If you have safety concerns, or notice any gaps in our security, then please tell the school principal. As parents, you have a valuable perspective that can help improve safety procedures. As gaps are identified, we will continuously refine and improve our lockdown procedures

Testing Information

posted Jan 4, 2017, 3:07 PM by Kathryn Lounsbury

Annual state testing notice

Each year, students in grades three through eight and grade 11 take state tests in English language arts and math. Students in grades five, eight and in high school also take a state science test. The tests measure students’ knowledge of state standards and give the state information about how schools are performing. Information from the Oregon Department of Education regarding parents’ right to opt students out of some state testing is available online. Click here to see ODE’s flyer: http://www.skgradguide.com/sites/default/files/opt-out-annual_2016-17.pdf
